Y. M. Nelson and Nerdy Romantics guests Staci, Dana, Corey, Perry, and Marcie talk all things Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This over two-hour discussion was a lively one where we touched on several topics that this rich movie and the franchise had to offer.

Topics We Discuss:

  • Our first experiences with the first Black Panther
  • Our impressions and first thoughts about what the second Black Panther would be
  • Chadwick Boseman’s passing and the future of the Black Panther character (*spoilers)
  • The societal issues brought up in this movie
  • The role of women in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • Storylines and screentime
  • Namor’s world and him as an anti-hero
  • Easter Eggs and little things of note
  • Overall rating (Based on Goodreads’ 5-star rating)

Comic Book References mentioned:

First is Black Panther by Christopher Priest. A lot of what you see in the depictions of Wakanda came out of this series and he introduced characters like Zuri, Okoye, and Nakia (though Nakia is very different in the movies from the comics). There are four large volumes in this series.

Don McGregor was the first writer to really do some groundbreaking work with T’Challa’s character. The Killmonger story from the first movie was largely inspired by the Panther’s Rage story. There’s also Panther’s Quest, which deals with apartheid South Africa and I believe this latter story is where Ramonda was first introduced.

And finally, Ta-Nehisi Coates’s run. That name alone is probably all you need to know. A lot of the modern trappings like Midnight Angel came out of this run.
